WHEN I WAS TOWARD THE LAW Part III ME 1958

Image
There were things to learn as one lurched toward a lifetime choice in 1958 , after leaving the Seminary in 1957.

So here I was, working in the GREEN HOUSE, Head Office of the New South Wales Government Railways ( NSWGR), in the Office of the Solicitor for Railways. As I showed in an earlier post, it was not a huge office ,but top heavy with Legal Professionals a smattering of clerical staff and me at the bottom of the pile!

On reflection, the Solicitors were a really varied lot, the Solicitor for Railways was a brooding, rather unpleasant person, his Deputy was a mild seeming rather pleasant chap, there were others varying from Victorian era avuncular to modern day sex- obsessed sleaze, to financially distressed totally pre-occupied wreck, to modern calm self- possessed and efficient, to modern slightly amused by it all,to  prim "this is all a bit beneath me" and to  "after what I saw in the war, nothing impresses me"and one or two others, I forget or would rather f…

WHEN I WAS TOWARD THE LAW Part II

 MY FAVOURITE FILM :

"A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS" -THE PAUL SCHOFIELD VERSION

I was enthralled by the Paul Schofield movie of "A Man For All Seasons"from the very first moment the projector began to roll and the majestic, super - confident and exciting medieval music of the soundtrack filled the theatre! And my attention did not wane for a moment until the very end when the closing titles rolled out the fates of the villains who brought the Saint's neck to the block.

Every aspect of the Fred Zinnemann film  made in 1966 and based on the play by Robert Bolt, was exemplary. But the best of everything technical will still fail if the script and cast are inadequate. Here they were and are brilliant. Robert Bolt himself adapted the Play for the screen and, in fact, much of the Plays dialogue is very true to St. Thomas' own words which are known from his own writings, records of his interrogations and of his trial. The cast was stunning from the masterly Paul Schofield h…

WHEN I WAS TOWARD THE LAW Part I-- SAINT THOMAS MORE

Image
This is the first of three posts having their origin in a phrase used by Saint Thomas  More during his trial.

When I first planned to do a post with the title "When I was toward the Law....", I had in mind resuming the recollections of my life, and that quote from St. Thomas More in the movie( in this it is more accurate than the play which says when I was practising the Law)) "A Man For All Seasons"(the Paul Schofield version , of course!) came to mind as being useful. I will get to those recollections in Part III.

But two obstacles stood before my proceeding immediately with what I had planned. Firstly, my abounding admiration of the Saint, and secondly and a lower plane my admiration for the Paul Schofield film of Robert Bolt's play "A Man for All Seasons".

St. Thomas More was surely the most brilliant and truly noble Englishman to have lived. Quite apart from, his sanctity, which is his highest achievement - we remember Our Lord's exhortation to…

CARDINAL PELL ON THE TRANSFIGURATION

Image
We  pray for the great Australian Cardinal Pell  and recall his Homily from four years ago. Transfiguration - Second Sunday of Lent St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney
Gen 22:1-2, 9-13, 15-18; Rom 8:31-34; Mk 9:2-10
By + Cardinal George Pell
Archbishop of Sydney
4 March 2012

The first reading about Abraham being prepared to sacrifice his only son Isaac (through whom God's promises about a vast inheritance were to be realised) and the story of the Transfiguration call us, in quite different ways, to a faith in the supernatural.
Even in a few corners of the Catholic Church some yearn for Christianity without the cross, are not keen on crucifixion Christianity. Abraham's willingness is even more difficult for them to fathom as he, rather than evil men, would have been the executioner. We have to grapple with the scriptures as they come to us with the Church's blessing. We are not entitled to reject or set aside a text because we find it unpleasant or too mysterious.
Some too would like t…

THE VERY MODEL OF A VIRTUOUS MAN

Image
Originally posted on 10th November, 2011 this seems worthy of further reflection to-day.

Last night as I read from Father Nicola Avancini's marvellous "Meditations"("The Life and Teaching of Our Lord Jesus Christ") I came across this passage :

"How crafty are our passions! They drag our virtues into their allegiance , thus pride ruins our acts of humility, and anger our zeal. It is so necessary to watch this, and not to allow our actions to be tainted with passion."

It immediately occurred to me that the last sentence provides the key to Pope Benedict XVI' serenity and humble yet authoritative calm in the face of so many trials, even from within the Church.

The usually authoritative Italian journalist Andrea Tornielli is reported to say that the Holy Father is suffering from Arthrosis which is apparently a quite painful degenerative disease of the joints, hence the recent entry into Saint Peter's Basilica on the wheeled platform.

Let us pray that t…

BLOODY MURDER AND VIOLENCE BY POLICE AND ARMY : BUHARI'S NIGERIA

Image
have had more than a passing interest in the agitation for a Biafran State to be carved out of Nigeria, and repeated stories of atrocities committed against the Biafran (Igbo) advocates. I have to admit that I had tended to discount these at least partially because of the passionate language used in the telling. To-day, I had the opportunity to view a 44 minute video taken on 9th February at the National High School in Aba. Normally I would not watch a lengthy video of news, but this made specific claims and I wanted to test their truthfulness. The Video had the advantage of being narrated by someone there as it was being taken, and the fellow was moderate in language and no rabble-rouser. I saw gathered on this High School playing field several thousand people demonstrating for the creation of a Biafran State and praying to God for that to happen. Now, of course, I could not understand what they were saying and had to rely on the narrator, except in the case of praying when the hands …

LOVE THE TRUE NATURE OF LOVE

Image
First posted on 16th February,2013  , this is timeless and nicely completes our recent posts on Love.

LOVE
DOES NOT WITHDRAW ITSELF
BUT ALWAYS GIVES TO THE TRULY BELOVED

During the holy season of Lent, the subject of Love is continuously brought to our attention. God's Love for us, our love for Him, and our love for one another.
Many people scorn the "Social Media" e.g. Facebook some of the same folk also disdain the Internet!
But this morning I noticed a Post on Facebook by a young African Seminarian from Nigeria with whom I have occasional contact. It is beautiful and shines from the goodness of his soul and heart : "
I have so much Love in and around me!
I was fashioned out of LOVE
I breath in LOVE and breath out LOVE
I act in and out of LOVE
And I know my earthly mission will only come to an end as a fulfilment of this same LOVE
It is this same LOVE we celebrate today.... The LOVE upheld by the New Testament,
The Love that is boundless,
The LOVE that breaks no heart
The LOVE t…

LOVE - REVEALING THE CENTRALITY OF LOVE

Image
Recurringly in his Gospel and his other writings, St.John leaves off his narrative, for a major reflection on the meaning of the Life of Christ, and the significance of aspects of it

In his Gospel , ( 3:16) he opens up the subject of God's Love:
For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not condemned; he who does not believe in Him is condemned already, because he has not believed in the Name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgement, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the Light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God.

Sometimes it pays to look back, to see just how bad things have been  - and to realise how much they have improved.
