THE EFFECT OF POPE FRANCIS

Image
One thing is undeniable about Pope Francis, he has caused Catholics to look again, and carefully think through, their attitudes to Papal statements and actions. We are not talking about Magisterial statements here, but routine expressions of opinion.

Admittedly there were not so many of these from Popes in recent decades , and when they came, they were usually only incidental to some major considered formal statement, letter or homily. But the recent , now famous at least, interview given by the Holy Father, has produced a torrent of his "off the cuff" remarks, many of which are very far from Magisterial teaching and entering into the area of statements of fact. Some have come to question a significant part of those "facts" - and those doing the questioning are those normally considered ultramontane - absolutely committed to the Pope in everything.

The point at issue is this part of the Holy Father's comments:

"We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion…

A " CATHOLIC " UNIVERSITY?

Image
Impressive! Or just more ACU Banyo?

Let us take a look at what Dr.Elmer wrote for the benefit of all the faithful Catholics attending Mass on 1st September,2013 :

" Those of us who are parents or teachers in Catholic schools often hear the complaint, "Why do I have to go to Church? I get nothing out of going to Mass every Sunday! I can pray to God in my own bedroom! What makes going to Sunday Mass so special?"

The complainants have a point. If we truly believe that Jesus is the Incarnation of God, then we must accept that no church, denomination or religion has a monopoly on God!

Our claim is not that God became a Catholic, but that God became human. And thus, all people, places and things can be sacramental, providing opportunities to encounter the presence of God. We can indeed, find God in a Catholic Church, but also in a Jewish synagogue, a Muslim mosque , a Hindu temple, a family meal , a wild garden , or a beautiful sunset."

BRISBANE ORATORY NEWS PRIESTS ON RETREAT -SEMINARIAN RECEIVES HABIT

Image
The great work of advancing toward the opening of the Brisbane Oratory is steadily progressing.

In recent days two significant developments took place:

A.  Father Paul Chandler and the other three Priests who will be founding members of the Brisbane Oratory have been on Retreat in pursuit of the development of the Oratorian spirituality. The other three Priests - it is understood that two are from other Dioceses - have not yet been named, in order to avoid disturbing their present assignments.

Shawn Murphy kneels after vesting in the habit.

B. The Seminarian Shawn Murphy has received the Oratorian habit at the Oratorian Seminary in Canada.

The development of the Brisbane Oratory is proceeding in a careful and considered way, as befits such a great work. In due course His Grace Archbishop Mark Coleridge will announce the Church which will be the Oratory , and closer to its establishment the names of the other Priests of the Oratory will be announced. And…

HERE IT IS! THE AUSTRALIAN FILE FOUND AGAIN! NEW EPISCOPAL APPOINTMENT

Image
Whereas Cardinal Marc Ouellet Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops made several visits to Pope Benedict XVI each week, producing a steady flow of Episcopal appointments, in recent months he has had only occasional Audiences with Pope Francis. Result : a rapid decline in the number of Episcopal Appointments. One can draw one's own conclusions, especially given the Holy Father's pre-occupation with reform of the Curia. But time waits for no man and Bishop's continue to die creating vacancies, and those overdue for replacement remain in place.

Just when it seemed that the Australian File at the Congregation for Bishops had gone missing again, and indeed when very few non-Argentinian Episcopal appointments are being made, the new Archbishop of Canberra-Goulburn has been appointed after a sede vacante situation since Archbishop Mark Coleridge vacated the See to take up his Brisbane appointment in May, 2012 - 16 long months ago.( It should be remembered that the Archdiocese al…

THE AMERICANS ...... AGAIN

Image
Readers might recall our Post in the Conclave run up :http://vexilla-regis.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/conclave-americans-baby.htmlentitled " The Americans Baby", in which we examined the unreality of much of the American Media and Blogosphere comment on the likelihood of an American (U.S.A.) Pope being elected.

In the last couple of weeks we have had the spectacle of American Catholics of a generally conservative, orthodox stamp, in conflict with one another. Like most things American the affair has money at its root. At least that has been the occasion of the conflict arising.

One of the greatest problems in the Church in America is the fact that Americanism is its defining characteristic in most places. " Americanism" may be taken to mean many things in many different contexts, but in this context it is a very generic form of "Americanism" of the current day, in which an absolute sentimental Patriotism comes before ALL else, everything is seen in political te…

Pope St Gregory the Great

FEW WRITINGS BY POPES or Saints give us such an endearing insight into the writer’s humble spirit as the extract from a homily set down in the Liturgy of the Hours for the Feast of St Gregory the Great on 3 September. Before we present the extract Let us consider the outline of his life.

Born in Rome around 540, Pope St Gregory the Great died on 12th March, 604. It has been rightly said of him “if no account were taken of his work, the evolution of the form of medieval Christianity would be almost inexplicable …… Almost all the leading principles of the later Catholicism are found, at any rate in germ, in Gregory the Great.” (Non-Catholic writer F.H.Dudden Gregory the Great, 1, p.v.)

His father was a wealthy patrician .They lived in a mansion on the Caelian Hill in Rome. Gregory’s mother and two of his aunts were saints (Saint Silvia and Saints Tarsilla and Aemiliana.) The fa…

POPE FRANCIS GOVERNING : APPOINTS A NEW SECRETARY OF STATE

Image
COMMENT

It remains to be seen how the role of Secretary of State will evolve in the re-organisation of the Curia. Since the time of Bl.Pope John Paul II its importance has been elevated to the highest level with all other dicasteries reporting through it to the Holy Father. For a very large part of that time the Secretary of State was Cardinal Angelo Sodano whose influence has perhaps not always worked to Cardinal Bertone's advantage as his successor.

Archbishop Parolin's statement above is most impressive and encouraging.
