THE MIRACLE OF LOVE - SAINT PETER AND THE HOUND OF HEAVEN

This post had an unusual origin but I believe it will be useful, perhaps to a particular person I shall never meet. Saint Peter is of particular importance in the long history of the Church. We know a reasonable amount about him. He came from Capharnaum where he lived with his wife and mother-in-law. He was a fisherman together with his brother Andrew, and it seems they had more than one boat , so they may have been significant among the local fishermen. Fishermen are proverbially rough and tumble folk , hardy and hard living. So it might seem surprising that Jesus chose Simon Bar-Jonah - for that was then his name, to be an Apostle.Jesus knew all about Simon of course, but Simon did not yet know that.
Such was the power of God's grace at work, that when Jesus bade Simon and Andrew to &qu…

BORDERING ON BLASPHEMY IN BRISBANE

Image
There are people whose outrageous writings from within the body of the Church seem to scream : " Look how far from the Truth I am! I'm just out of control! Stop me ....Please!"

Such a one is Elizabeth Harrington who rejoices in the title of "Education Officer Liturgy Brisbane" and is a long time protege of the Director of Liturgy Brisbane. For many years now this poor lady has written the column " Liturgy Lines" in the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Brisbane " The Catholic Leader". Over the years the Paper has had a chequered history largely on the " wrong side of the tracks" from the point of view of orthodoxy. But for several years now,and particularly under its present Editor, it has largely clawed its way back.

Elizabeth Harrington has always been one of the leading acts in its display of errant opinion. Nevertheless, in the days of Archbishop Bathersby, whilst his Grace would privately write that he had corrected her, …

PART TWO WHY DID JESUS DO IT?......... AND WHAT ABOUT GOD?

Review

In Part One of this Post we reflected upon the unique character of the Catholic Church - founded by Christ under the leadership of Saint Peter and his lawful Successors and guaranteed the presence of Christ until the end of time , assured of its ultimate protection against Satanic attack. We saw that Christ Himself gave the Church its mission to preach His gospel to everyone throughout the world until the end of time.

As we went along, we saw that Christ's desire for the unity of His Church, both organic and in Truth, had been frustrated by the Protestant Deformation and by dissenters within the Church in the present in the present age.We particularly took note of the adoption by some, of the
idea that all religions are equal. Among those propagating this heretical view are some Catholic Universities and some Priest- Lecturers. We looked at the origins of this error and found them in the Protestant Deformation and the so-called Enlightenment . We saw that the new belief system a…

POPE FRANCIS - A SHOCK FOR LIBERATION THEOLOGIANS

Image
The highly regarded Italian journalist Sandro Magister has published the following on his Blog " CHIESA": http://chiesa.espresso.repubblica.it/articolo/1350519?eng=y
He recounts the tale of the dashed expectations of Liberation Theologians.
" Bergoglio, a Revolutionary His Own Way Liberation theologians extol him, but between him and them there is a chasm. The progressives enlist him, but he keeps himself far from them. The true Francis is very different from the one that some imagine

by Sandro Magister

ROME, May 16, 2013 – In an ongoing honeymoon with public opinion, Pope Francis has also gained the praise of the most revolutionary of the Franciscan theologians, the Brazilian Leonardo Boff: "Francis will teach a lesson to the Church. We are coming out of a bitter and gloomy winter. With him comes the spring.”

Boff set aside his religious habit some time ago, got married, and replaced his love for Marx with an environmentalist's fondness for mother earth and brother …

POPE FRANCIS - MORE FIRE! - ITALIAN DISCOMFORT?

Image
"May 24, 2013. (Romereports.com) For the first time, Pope Francis met with all Italian bishops. The gathering with more than 250 bishops, marked the end of their Plenary Assembly and the Pope made it a point to make two very direct requests. With more than 226 dioceses in Italy, he asked bishops to reduce the number of dioceses to prevent so called 'careerism.' He also asked them to directly deal with Italy's public institutions, as opposed to passing on that responsibility to the Vatican.

POPE FRANCIS “I know there's a commission for this, to lower this excessive number of dioceses. It's not easy, but there is a commission for it. We must move  forward with fraternity. Italy's Episcopal Conference should embrace this dialogue with Italy's cultural, social and political institutions. This is your task. Onward!
To celebrate the Year of Faith, the Pope prayed the Creed along with the bishops, before the tomb of St. Peter. A group of deaf people also joine…

POPE FRANCIS IS "ON FIRE"!

A very pointed message for Bishops:

Here is an extract from the latest Vatican Information Service Bulletin :

"Vatican City, 24 May 2013 (VIS) – Yesterday afternoon in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Francis presided at the profession of faith with all the Italian episcopacy gathered for their 65th general assembly. It was the first time that the Holy Father met with all the representatives of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), whom he greeted personally, one by one.
“The consequence of loving the Lord,” the Pope said to the bishops, “is giving everything—absolutely everything, even up to our very lives—for him. This is what must distinguish our pastoral ministry: it is the litmus test that says how deeply we have embraced the gift received in responding to Jesus' call and how connected we are to the persons and the communities that have been entrusted to us. We are not the expression of an organizational structure or need. Even with the service of our authority we are calle…

"NOT AGAINST US" AND " FOR US"

Image
The Gospel of to-day's Mass is amongst the shortest we encounter in the three year cycle : Mark 9: 38-40. It concludes with Jesus saying to Saint John : "....Anyone who is not against us is for us". This is said in the context of the disciples trying to stop a non-disciple driving out devils in the Lord's Name, and Jesus telling them that they must not stop him.

This passage has, in recent years, led some homilists to proceed from this  statement to say that it means that Catholics should be more open to the good works done by other Christian "communities"But is this a proper analysis of the passage?

Who?

" Anyone who is not against us...." clearly Jesus is excluding people who would oppose His teachings when He uses the words " against us", from acting in His Name.

As Catholics, we are blessed with the fullness of Christ's Truth entrusted to His Church to teach and to safeguard. This fact is not a matter of despised " Triumphalism&…

WHY DID JESUS DO IT ? AND WHAT ABOUT......GOD?

Image
Many people devote a great deal of energy asking why God allows this or that to happen. But, generally speaking, people are inclined to take things that God has done for granted. They don't ask questions , or perhaps , even try think it through for themselves.

To a large extent that is appropriate. It is not for us to second guess God. But, if we forget known reasons for God's actions, it can lead to serious problems.

CHRIST'S CHURCH

Consider the foundation by Jesus Christ of His Church .It is with us still
( just as He promised) , and, like it or loathe it the World sees it as a normal part of life. But why did Jesus establish His Church? And what are His intentions for it? And what are the implications for us?

It is hardly a secret, for in the Sacred Scriptures we hear Jesus Christ  - God made Man - give the Great Commission to His Apostles ( Matt. 28 : 16-20) :

"All authority in Heaven and on Earth has been given to Me.

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, bapt…
